Mobile phone ownership in Sub Saharan Africa has seen exponential growth in only a few years leading to more people that own at least one basic phone. According to Pew Research Centre, today cell phones are as common in South Africa and Nigeria as they are in the United States. This increased access to mobile technology creates many benefits for the population in terms of access to education, health services and financial services, among others. It also provides the opportunity to reach marginalized groups like women with information and services that improve their well being.
