Can text messages change people’s behaviour and knowledge?

Candice Wong, researcher from the University of Birmingham, wrote an interesting paper on two TTC projects: “Can text messages change people’s behaviour and knowledge?”

PhoneThe paper focusses on two SMS programs in Uganda. One program was performed by TTC and Health Child and used SMS for better maternal and child service. The purpose of the project was to increase access to health information and health services among rural communities. They wanted to gauge and increase the knowledge of participants on HIV/AIDS among 7.000 people in Jinja and the nearby area. The second program was an SMS adherence program for HIV treatment performed by TTC and Kawempe Home Care.  SMS reminders were sent out to clients, aiming to improve treatment adherence and compliance rate among patients. The SMS intervention lasted for 16 months and for those who received SMS reminders the adherence rate increased from 85% to 92%.

How TTC creates opportunity for women providing them with information via mobile

Today the world celebrates International Women’s Day and so does TTC. I would like to take this opportunity to highlight two of my favorite TTC projects which focus on the social development of women. The first campaign is the largest scale mHealth project for women in Africa. During this campaign pregnant women received important health information via SMS. The second project is about how TTC helps female victims of gender based violence.

Mobile technology to create nutrition awareness

TTC partnered with Save the Children and Unicef to create a Nutrition Awareness Program in Lindi, Tanzania. Information about nutrition was shared via SMS to a large group of people who voluntarily subscribed to the program, everyone who was interested could subscribe to the program. The purpose of this program was threefold:

  • Raise awareness on the issue of malnutrition
  • Raise awareness about an event held in Northern Tanzania on
December 8th2012 about the importance of nutrition
  • Involve the general public in the campaign

ttc launches large scale ivr-platform in ghana to reach illiterate audience with vital information

From mid-March TTC will be able to connect with beneficiaries at grassroots level throughout Ghana in a new and innovative way. After months of planning and design, the last phase of implementation of a cloud-based, Interactive Voice Response (IVR)-platform has started. IVR systems provide an easy way to distribute and collect information through voice messages and voice commands, especially targeting illiterate audiences unable to read and/or write. More
